Alexis and Craig's relationship began online, but progressed until they finally met in person. How is this different from relationships that remain entirely online?
I could not even imagine maintaining a long term relationship entirely online. I think that even people who actively try and find love on the Internet do so with the intention of eventually meeting the person and continuing in a face to face relationship. Jerry Suler wrote "Humans need physical contact with each other. Infants sink into depression and die without it." I never knew that people actually chose to continue their online relationship indefinitely. I always thought that the Internet was used merely as a tool to initiate face to face relationships and perhaps to continue communicate in a long distance relationship.
Does anyone know of a relationship where the individuals choose to only interact online?

Agreed. I 100% agree with you. I too believe the internet can be a tool to "initiate face to face relationships" and "continue communication in a long distance relationship." It's absolutely true that humans need physical contact; We only learn about that, in like, EVERY Psychology class! It just isn't real without it...at least not forever. Like I wrote on Maxie's blog, I do believe Alexis fell in love with Craig before actually physically meeting him, but it was their actual meeting in person that helped her progress her feelings of love for him.
ReplyDeleteSuler also discusses platonic love where you are primarily attracted to someones' mind. "in cyberspace, most of the time all you really experience is the other person's mind, and not their physical qualities." (Suler, 1) So while a platonic relationship might be enough for some individuals I definately feed off of personal interaction with others and would not be content with a strictly cyber-relationship.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. The point of being a person is for human interactions. We would not survive otherwise. I agree that the fact that Alexis and Craig's relationship grew was the fact that they met face to face and that they felt the physical attraction was there along with the intellectual.
ReplyDeleteI felt that baecause in both cases the women went into this relationship having low expectations because I feel that they had a low sense of self worth.
